CONNIE KRAUS RETIREMENT

“Congratulations Connie you earned it.  Connie has seen a lot over the years.  The strikes, layoffs, while working without a contract the company shut off payroll deduction on union dues.  The Local was flat broke but somehow Connie and her co-workers seemed to help us work through all this.  With all this behind us she worked diligently to get the dues reports current, we were over a year behind that had to be logged into the computer.

Connie was a great asset to the Local and will greatly be missed by all!  We thank you for all your hard work and dedication.

I WILL NOT BE PURGED T-SHIRT

Once C.E.O. Jim Owens made his comment that the company is having kind of a challenge of getting the union alliance out of their employees.  A we/they ism, that they haven’t successfully purged.  If we pay you, you’re on our team and we want your heart and soul. (Wrong)

Let me tell you that everyday I went into work I gave this company the very best quality I could give!  This is a fact with the majority of Caterpillar employees.  Good quality help secure job security its only common sense.

This is all done being a proud and active member of Local 974.  I am a 4th generation that has worked at Caterpillar, when I hired in with good wages, good benefits and good retirement.  You worked hard and put your best quality into your work and had pride in the company and union.  If Jim Owens was smart he would follow the early leaders of this company and get back to the basics and take good care of your employees and they will take good care of your company with Pride!

Now with all that said about being purged.  International has purchased t-shirts for the membership.  You have to come by the union hall and sign for your free t-shirt.  Any time the union gives anything away that was purchased with dues dollars.  President George W. Bush makes union record this information and reports this to the Department of Labor.  All part of this LM-2 compliance that was forced on us by George W. Bush himself.

TRAINING & ORGANIZING

President Chapman and Executive Vice President Doty have been working on organizing drives and then bargaining their contract once organized.  We sent Safety Sub Committeemen to Safety Training in Black Lake put on by International.  We sent committeemen to Ottawa for Advance Grievance Training.  Also there were new member orientation classes that were held at the Local in April & October of each year.

The last two years Bargaining Chairman Bill Scott held Steward Training meetings for all union stewards.  We had over 300 stewards attend.  I took care of all the stewards lost time vouchers for their wages, gathered their insurance information, their W-4’s tax forms and also had to file an I-9 form for proof of identification another one of George W. Bushes LM-2 laws.

It was really good to see so many attend.

RECAP OF LOCAL 974 EVENTS

The Local has continued it’s fund raising for the Heather Henniger Scholarship Fund that benefits the student of UAW members.  There have been the Die Cast Toy Shows and the Arts & Craft Shows.  The Local has done Golf Outings, Poker Runs (Memorial Rides) and Bowling Tournaments to help build up the fund.  A big thanks to everyone that has made all the events successful.

Another huge thanks to the retirees for all their hard work for all their events that have helped the community and Local 974 members, the retirees have set up Blood Drives with the Red Cross that are held at the Union Hall.  They have also had Fish Fry’s that have helped to purchase gifts for residents in Bel-Wood Nursing Home.  Another event that has grown each year is the Labor Day Picnic it has always been a great success along with the Labor Day Parade.  I have enjoyed all the events that the Local has held and participated in most.

TRI-ANNUAL ELECTION IN MAY

As the election nears I look back over the last three years.  These were probably the fastest and the busiest three years of my life.  I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to have served you it was an honor and a privilege.

This leadership was put to the test financially and stood the test.  We came out from a huge debt and managed to pull off all these events year in and year out.  We have trained numerous members and remained financially sound.

I ask for your continued support for this leadership in this next election.

V-CAP CHECK OFF

Remember you can sign up to get V-CAP check off deducted right out of your check.  As little as $2.00 a month gets you a chance for your name to be put in the drawing.  This next drawing will be in October for another cash prize of $15,000.  If you’re not on V-CAP check off drop by the hall and sign up or have your steward or committeeman bring you a card to sign.  Last year’s winner of $15,000 was Lloyd Schoen, a retiree out of Local 180 in Case New Holland.

PLEASE CONTACT DUES OFFICE

If any member is going out on Medical, Worker’s Compensation, Retiring, Family Leave, on Military Duty or Quit, please contact the Dues Office with your last day worked and also your return to work date.  We no longer receive lists from the Company and this will be of great assistance to the Local.  It will also help keep records for you if needed.

SOLDIERS BIBLE

Bill Brandon a brother from Local 2488 has pocket sized bibles for our members that have served or are still active.  Feel free to contact me and drop by and pick up your copy.  These bibles were donated but we are asking for a freewill donation to help maintain an adequate supply for the membership.

SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN

As always, please keep all the service men and women in your thoughts and prayers.  We have several of our membership that have been activated and that have family that have also been called to duty.

Text Box: “There is a direct relationship between the bread box and the ballot box.

What the Union fights for and wins at the bargaining table can be taken away in the legislative halls”
